DIY Mini Wallet Tutorial: The Perfect Card & Coin Purse with a Simple Pattern

Hello to all my fellow sewing enthusiasts! Welcome back to the blog.
If you are looking for a quick, satisfying, and incredibly practical sewing project, you have come to the right place. Today, I am sharing a guide on how to create a Handmade Mini Wallet that is small enough to fit in your palm but functional enough to carry your essential cards and coins.

In a world where we are moving toward minimalism, having a bulky wallet isn't always ideal. Whether you're heading out for a quick coffee run, going for a jog, or just want to organize your small crossbody bag, this mini wallet is the perfect solution.

Why You’ll Love This Project

This isn't just another pouch; it is a carefully designed accessory.

  • One-Pattern Simplicity: You don't need a complex multi-piece pattern.

  • Dual Storage: It features a dedicated slot for cards and a secure pocket for coins.

  • Scrap Friendly: You can make this using small fabric remnants you have lying around.

  • Perfect for Gifting: Once you make one, you’ll want to make a dozen for your friends and family!

Project Specifications & Materials

Before we sit down at the sewing machine, let's get our materials ready. Precision is key to a professional-looking finish, so I recommend using a rotary cutter and a quilting ruler if you have them.

Finished Size

  • Approx. 7cm x 10cm (Perfect for credit cards and loose change)

Fabric & Cutting List

1. Outer Layer (Main Fabric) To give your wallet a beautiful look, choose a high-quality cotton or linen fabric.

  • Main Body: 20cm x 20cm (1 piece)

  • Pocket Piece: 10cm x 11cm (1 piece)

  • Detail Tab: 5cm x 10cm (1 piece)

2. Lining Fabric Choose a coordinating color or a fun contrasting print for the inside!

  • Lining: 20cm x 20cm (1 piece)

3. Interfacing (Structured Support) To give the wallet that crisp, boutique feel, interfacing is essential. I recommend something similar to Pellon 987F or Vilene H630.

  • Main Interfacing: 18cm x 18cm (1 piece)

  • Reinforcement: 3cm x 4cm (1 piece) — This is used to stabilize the snap button area.

4. Notions

  • 1 Set of Plastic Snap Buttons: Easy to install and gives a modern look.

  • Basic Sewing Kit: Thread, pins/clips, and iron.

Visual Guide: Making Process in Photos

To help you succeed, I have documented the key stages of the making process with high-resolution photos. Below, you will see how the fabric transforms from simple squares into a functional 3D accessory.

Sewing Tips for Success

1. Don't Skip the Ironing: In small-scale sewing like this, "pressing as you go" is the difference between a homemade look and a handmade professional look. Every seam should be pressed flat.

2. Clip Your Corners: When you turn the wallet right side out, make sure to clip the excess fabric at the corners (being careful not to cut the stitches). This ensures your corners are nice and pointy.

3. The Snap Placement: Double-check your snap placement before punching the hole! Use a fabric pen to mark the spot and ensure the wallet closes comfortably when filled with a few cards.

Final Thoughts

Making your own accessories is such a rewarding experience. It allows you to express your style while creating something truly useful. This mini wallet is a great way to practice your precision sewing skills without feeling overwhelmed.
