DIY Mini Zipper Pouch Tutorial: The Perfect Scrap Fabric Project (Lip Balm Holder)

Hello, fellow sewers!

Do you have a bin full of small fabric scraps that are too cute to throw away but too small for a big project? Today, I’m sharing the perfect solution: a Mini Zipper Pouch Tutorial!

This tiny pouch is designed to hold a lip balm perfectly, but it’s also great for storing coins, AirPods, a USB drive, or emergency jewelry. The best part? It features an O-ring, so you can hang it on your main bag, backpack, or car keys like a cute charm.

It’s a quick and satisfying project that you can finish in under 10 minutes. Let’s turn those scraps into something useful!

Finished Size

It’s tiny, compact, and super cute!

Width: 10cm

Height: 3cm
Depth: 2.5cm

 Materials Needed

Since this is a scrap-busting project, feel free to mix and match different prints for the outer and lining fabrics!

1. Outer Fabric (Cotton)

    12cm x 14cm (1 piece) – Main body

15cm x 4cm (1 piece) – For the zipper tabs and the side loop

2. Lining Fabric

    12cm x 14cm (1 piece)

3. Bias Tape (For clean finishing inside)

    6cm x 4cm (1 piece)

4. Zipper & Hardware

    Zipper: 15cm long

O-ring: 1 piece (This allows you to attach the pouch to your bag!)

5. Interfacing / Fusible Fleece This is the secret to a professional-looking pouch. It gives the fabric structure and a soft, puffy feel.

    10cm x 12cm

Note: I recommend using a fusible fleece similar to 'Pellon 987F' or 'Vilene H630'.

Key Project Features

1. The "Keyring" Style (O-ring) Instead of just a plain pouch, we are adding a small fabric loop and an O-ring to the side. This transforms the pouch into a "Bag Charm." You won't have to dig through your large tote bag to find your lip balm anymore—just clip it to the handle!

2. Why Use Fusible Fleece? You might wonder if interfacing is necessary for such a small item. The answer is yes! Using a fusible fleece (like Pellon 987F or Vilene H630) adds volume. Without it, the pouch might look limp. With the fleece, it holds the square shape beautifully and protects whatever is inside.

3. Scrap Buster Alert This project uses very small rectangles. It is the best way to use up your favorite fabric leftovers. Even a 12cm x 14cm piece can become a lovely gift for a friend.
