[DIY] Easy Mini Zipper Pouch Tutorial (Perfect for Cards, Coins & Lipstick)

Hi everyone! Today, I’m excited to share a tutorial on how to make a super simple Mini Zipper Pouch, perfect for sewing beginners.

Do you ever find your lipstick, car keys, coins, or frequently used cards floating around at the bottom of your bag? This pouch is the perfect solution to keep those small essentials organized. It has great storage capacity despite its small size, and best of all, you can make it quickly using just scrap fabric!

I’ve included step-by-step photos and a detailed video link below, so please follow along at your own pace.

Finished Size & Materials

[What You Need]

The finished pouch is a cute, palm-sized handy pouch. It works great as a wallet substitute or for carrying AirPods and keys.

Finished Size: Approx. 9cm x 12cm ( 3.5" x 4.7"Flat type) 25cm x 5cm

Time Required: 10 mins

Outer Fabric: 14cm x 12cm (3 pieces)

Tip: Sturdier fabrics like Oxford or Linen work best.

Lining Fabric: 14cm x 12cm (1 pieces)

Fusible Interfacing: Same size as outer fabric (2 pieces)

Tip: This gives the pouch structure so it holds its shape well.

Zipper: At least 15cm long (Size #3 zipper recommended)

Tools: Sewing machine (or needle & thread), pins or clips, fabric scissors, iron.

Instructions (Step-by-Step)

1. Prep and Interface

Iron the fusible interfacing onto the wrong side (back side) of your outer fabric pieces. Make sure the rough (glue) side of the interfacing faces the fabric.

2. Install the Zipper (The Sandwich Method)

This might seem tricky, but just remember the "Sandwich" order!

  1. Place the Outer Fabric face up (Right Side Up).

  2. Place the Zipper face down along the top edge (Zipper pull facing the fabric).

  3. Place the Lining Fabric face down on top (Right Side Down).

  4. Sew along the top edge with a 1cm seam allowance.

Repeat this process for the other side of the zipper with the remaining fabric pieces.

3. Topstitch (Important!)

Open the fabric so the right sides are facing out and press it flat with an iron. Then, topstitch (sew a straight line) about 0.2~0.3cm away from the zipper edge.

Tip: This prevents the lining from getting caught in the zipper later and gives it a professional finish.

4. Sew the Pouch Together

This is the critical step! Make sure to unzip the zipper halfway. (This is your turning gap later). Pin the fabrics so that Outer fabrics face each other and Lining fabrics face each other.

Important: Push the zipper teeth/bulk towards the Lining side (or Outer side depending on preference, usually towards the lining makes corners neater).

Sew all the way around the perimeter, but leave a 5~6cm opening (gap) at the bottom of the lining for turning.

5. Clip Corners & Turn

Clip the four corners diagonally (being careful not to cut the stitches) to reduce bulk. Turn the pouch right side out through the opening you left in the lining.

6. Finish

Close the opening in the lining by hand (ladder stitch) or with a machine stitch. Tuck the lining inside the outer fabric, poke out the corners nicely, and give it a final press with the iron. You're done!

Final Thoughts

Simple, right? You can make practical items like this with just small scraps of fabric. If you make it with your favorite patterned fabric, it becomes a special "daily pouch" that brings you joy every time you use it.

It also makes a thoughtful, handmade gift for friends. I hope you give it a try this weekend! If you have any questions, feel free to leave a comment below. Happy sewing! :)
